Now That I’ve Taken This Course
When I first started this course I was so cared because I didn’t know what to expect. I was scared to do any assignments, I thought that everyone else’s would be better than mine and I didn’t know what I was doing. But through everything I made it through and I can honestly say I am proud of myself. I’ve done some of my best work in this class and put forth a lot of effort. I learned a lot and I read with more understanding now. I always tell my mom about this class and tell her many of the things I’ve learned about. I really enjoyed myself and look forward to taking more classes like this. Classes where I am challenged.

NATURAL HAIR
In class about a week ago we were talking about the book Fanon. they were discussing black people trying to get back to “Africa”, in a sense of trying to connect. The topic came up about black women and if they stopped getting relaxers to reach back to their “roots”, or if it is just a fad. I looked online to see reasons women chose to make the transition to natural and here are some of the things that I found…
- Improve hair health
- Be a role model for friends, family, and/or children
- Health reasons discourage relaxer use (e.g. pregnancy)
- Be more environmentally conscious
- Embrace cultural history
- Save money
- Spiritual reasons
- Try something new
I agree with most of these reason, but I also believe people are doing it for just a fad. Its the trend of the moment. People have really jumped on the band wagon in the past two years. When I first went natural I was going into the tenth grade. I didn’t really have a choice in the transition, we just switched salons. I don’t personally agree with the notion that going natural saves you money. With the salon that I go to it cost more to maintain my natural hair, and you also have to go more often. The products that you but are just as expensive if not more, and it is more maintenance. Though my hair does feel better with being natural it is just as healthy as it was with a relaxer. Many women have opinions about natural hair, so here are some links to read how they feel.
